How I Plan My Weeks, a Guide to Using a Paper Planner

My planner isn’t just a way for me to stay organized, it’s also a hobby of mine that I enjoy spending time on. My little spiral bound book has become a sort of media journal where I can not only keep track of what’s going on in my family’s lives, but also record small journal entries or funny things my kids said that day. My planner simplifies my life and keeps me on track for a productive week. There is a method to my madness and today I’m sharing how I plan my weeks out, what methods I use, how I set (and achieve!) goals, and more. Grab a cup of coffee, sister. Let’s get nerdy together!
A perfectly creamy cup of coffee
Planning is practically impossible without a large hot cup of creamy coffee. I prefer my coffee creamy and flavored with Simply Pure Coffee Creamer in Hazelnut flavor. Using card inserts
I use card inserts to help me remember things that need to be added to each week and month, in addition to things I need to be sure to plan for on odd and even months. These are tasks and activities I need to do regularly and keeping them on a handy card is helpful as I plan through my weeks. I reference this card at the beginning of each week when I’m planning it and that creates a map for the rest of the week.
Setting weekly and monthly goals
I use the blank page at the beginning of each month to set goals for that month. Whether it’s a long planned family vacation or just a personal goal I want to achieve, that’s where I brainstorm my desires for the month and put them down on paper. In addition, I try to set at least three goals weekly, or master to-do’s for myself. I write these down in each week so that I see them visually and they’re at the forefront of my mind.
Daily appointments and to do’s
Once I’ve got the items on my card inserts written down and my goals set, I move on to any appointments or engagements I’ve set. This is also when I go through my week and create a to do list for each day. As a blogger, I have certain tasks I try to complete each day to ensure my lil ol’ Internet couch stays active and engaged. It’s also a way for me to see a snapshot of my week so I can be sure to balance work and family without exhausting myself.
For me, using a paper planner has been the most effective method for being a goal getter. As a visual person, it helps me to see what lies ahead for the week and how I can best manage my time. While my guide to using a paper planner may not be for you, I think it’s important for everyone to find a system that is most effective for them. Planning ahead and strategizing your weeks can be an efficient way to ensure your personal and professional goals are being challenged and achieved.
