Oreo Snack Packs, a Summer Travel Essential

June 22, 2015Holly Sosa

The past couple of weeks, my family and I have been visiting my home state, Michigan. As excited as I was to visit the greenery and sparkling shores of Lake Huron, I was stressed about the travel time. Traveling from SoCal to Northern Michigan with three kids in tow is not a task I take lightly. In fact, I questioned my sanity a few times, ha! With a four hour plane ride and a three hour car ride after that, I knew I’d have to prepare myself with plenty of snacks and boredom busting activities. To do this, I bought all three of my kids backpacks and filled them with snacks and loads of games, crafts, and stickers to keep them busy.

The best place to get travel games and activities on the cheap is at the dollar store. I visited several different ones and found all sorts of fun things: travel board games, crayons, coloring books, fun magnets, plastic dinos, sunglasses, toy cars, and even a road trip BINGO for the RV ride. But my super secret weapon was these little 2-pack OREO cookies found in multipacks of 18 at most grocery stores (and also available in Nutter Butter). An OREO 2-pack is the perfect serving size for snack time and for keeping cooped up little ones happy during a long trip.

With only one meltdown towards the end of the flight, I was happy with how my kiddos handled the long travel time. I call that a success. Thankfully, their backpacks were filled with enough snacks and activities to keep them entertained and satisfied for much of the flight and then the drive. Once we arrived at Grandpa’s farm, all was right in the world and the backpacks were completely ignored for the great, wide open, welcoming greenery of Michigan.
